Robbie's Tarpon Feeding
There is much more to Robbie's of Islamorada than just the tarpon feeding off the dock but for affordability and the fun factor this wins out as one of the top things to do with the kids in the Keys. For about $4 you can gain access to the dock ($1) and get a bucket of bait fish ($3) to feed the tarpon. Your kids will be delighted and amazed by these creatures and get a real kick out of feeding them.
Key Largo Community Park
Key Largo Community Park in Monroe County is a great place to come to spend the day. It is located on the same block as Jacob's Aquatic Center an affordable local water park. This park has a beautiful new skate park managed by the YMCA. They frequently sponsor skate camps for the local kids as well as lots of other programming. If you want to get your heart pumping, try out the fitness trail or a round of tennis at one of the six tennis courts.
Harry Harris County Park
Harry Harris County Park is located in the town of Tavernier in the Florida Keys. This park is a quiet place good for families with small children since there is a small man-made lagoon type beach to enjoy. It does not open to the ocean and it is protected from waves. Children can play at the playground and there are plenty of spots for a picnic available. Restrooms and showers are on location. Baseball and softball fields are located at this park and it is a popular spot for local teams to play.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a Florida state park located between 2 bodies of water: Largo Sound and Tarpon Basin on the Atlantic Ocean side of Key Largo. The park consists of about 70 nautical miles and encompasses several types of habitats. The mangrove swamps, upland areas, and hammocks offer some interesting land exploration opportunities on well-maintained trails. The main draw for the park are its spectacular coral reefs which can be viewed by glass bottom boat or on snorkeling and scuba diving expeditions.
Florida Keys Wild Bird Center
For the bird watcher in all of us the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center is a sanctuary for native and migratory birds. It's mission, to rescue, rehab, and release birds that have been harmed or displaced. As a public service this establishment also aims to educate the importance of this conservation effort. Visitors enjoy a boardwalk stroll to stop at various aviaries along the way. With species like the Broad Winged Hawk, Turkey Vultes, a Horned and Barred Owel, Pelicans and much more, you are sure to be inspired by these wonderful creatures.
Sundiver Snorkeling Tours
Sundiver Snorkeling Tours has been providing an expert snorkel experience within the John Pennekamp State Park, or National Marine Sanctuary, since 1972. Their Coast Guard certified staff are experienced with families, kids and first time snorkelers. They visit one of dozens of shallow reef sites each time they go out. You can snorkel several times with them and experience different areas each time. The price of the tour includes enrtrance fees, ice cold water and transportation.
