Bring an appetite for learning and exploration and enjoy talks with expert horticulturists, view amazing art and take classes on topics ranging from grafting to photography. When you need to take a rest, take a seat and watch the birds and the butterflies as they flit about on their daily chores. See a plant you would love to have in your own garden? Stop by the Shop at Fairchild and bring home a special souvenir or seeds to plant. Several events are hosted at the garden including plant sales, holiday celebrations and festivals.
The Science Village Complex & Wings of the Tropics Conservatory is a must stop on your trip to Fairchild. Walk through the Wings of The Tropics Conservatory where literally hundreds of colorful butterflies fly amongst tropical plants, amazing orchids, and colorful fish. The Glasshouse Cafe serves up delectable food as well as stunning views into the Conservatory where you can watch a moving rainbow of butterflies while you eat. Watch as butterfly pupae are cared for in the Vollmer Metamorphosis Lab or watch as the chrysalises hatch in real time. It is from here that the 3,000 butterflies, 40 species or more at a time, literally take flight into the Wings of the Tropics. The Science Village is home to scholars from local Universities doing research and grant work. They also have an outreach program for students to learn about Tropical biodiversity from as young as pre-schoolers to graduate students!
