Tropical Storm Safety and Activities for Children
Severe weather and thunderstorms can be frightening and stressful for children and young adults. The strong winds, pounding rain, and destruction left in the wake of a tropical storm or hurricane can be devastating to a young mind, resulting in trauma that lasts much longer than the physical aftermath. To help your child cope in these situations, today's blog post will focus on tropical storm safety and activities for children.

Summer Survival in South Florida
It's Summertime and the kids are out of school with months of unstructured time looming before you.
Top 5 Trolley Rides in South Florida
Take your kids for a trolley ride!
You see them while driving about town and the kids holler "LOOK! A TROLLEY!". You smile and say "I see it". They may even beg to ride one. Why not indulge them in a local adventure? Several cities are providing trolley service in order to reduce traffic by enabling people to access their jobs, homes, shops and public facilities without driving and parking. They are either free or very affordable.
Hottest Spots for Cooling Down--Water Parks and Splash Pads
Every year in March local waterparks begin to re-open in preparation for the hottest time of the year in South Florida...SUMMER! Kids are out of school and families are desperate to keep them cool and entertained. South Florida has everything from pools to splash pads to major water parks to choose from.
Off Season Beach Bliss! Gulfstream Park
This morning we got out the door by 7am and trotted off to one of our favorite beach spots, Gulfstream Park in the Boynton Beach area. This park is so popular during the season that the usual "get there early" advice still doesn't really help ya much. People spend forever trolling the parking lot just to be able to enjoy the facilities. This morning all the front spaces were available and there was only a handful of folks there. The boys made a bee line for the shore area. We enjoyed a low key morning digging in the sand, collecting "treasures" and rolling in the surf.
January Morning at Lake Ida Park
The day before Winter Break ended for Palm Beach county public schools, I took a morning trip to the Lake Ida Dog Park. I had avoided this park for quite some time since I'd, incorrectly, assumed it was strictly a place for dogs to play. I had envisioned open fields with running dogs filled with little poop treasures for my kids to stumble through. I once tried driving into the long narrow park but saw only some parking and picnic pavilions.
Sugar Sand Park
The city of Boca Raton's Sugar Sand Park located in southwest Boca Raton has every thing a family could want! We've been taking our boys to the park since they were able to crawl. We've never lived near by but it is definitely worth the trek. They host a free monthly Kindermusik class for the babies and young toddlers. In the same building is the Science Explorium which has an existing exhibit with an electric train, hot air balloon and a neat race car with power tools the children can play with safely.
Filling the Gap
The new school year has begun and for those of us with active school age children that can mean a flurry of activities--PTA, classroom events, and extracurricular pursuits. I find that the biggest challenge has been trying to find activities to "Fill the Gap" between when school gets out and when extracurricular activities begin (karate, music, dance, football, etc). I figured that I'm not alone. It can be a struggle to think of something to do to kill time for only an hour or two.
