Robert King High Park and Carlos Arboleya Campground
The Robert King High Park and Carlos Arboleya Campground in Miami, Florida dates from the early 70's and was reopened in 2011 after extensive remodeling. The improved park features a new building for classes and meetings plus the addition of a sanded volleyball court.
This huge park lies next to Lake Mahar in Miami-Dade County. It is popular with residents and tourists alike. A very active park, it contains multiple areas for both indoor and outdoor activities. It features multiple sports arenas for a variety of events. A covered basketball court with bleachers, for instance, is one of six basketball courts. Other sports fields offer softball and baseball. Tennis players have a choice of several places including one enclosed court. Visitors also enjoy fishing in the nearby lake, swimming in the park pool and watching their children in the water splash playground. Both the park and the campground offer picnic shelters and hiking trails. A special domino pavilion attracts many different cultures and ages who enjoy this sedentary game. Parents like the sand-less playground for smaller children.
The new building features more space to house computer labs and classrooms for indoor programs, exhibitions and activities. Working parents appreciate the after-school programs and seasonal camps.
The campground offers general camping facilities for all group sizes. It regularly hosts Scouting programs and camps as well as reunion opportunities for families or special groups such as veterans. The facilities are used for the ongoing summer and winter camps and a spring break camp.
The park is named for Robert King High who was mayor of Miami for 10 years before his death in 1967. The campground bears the name of Carlos Arboleya, a well-respected Miami business man who was dedicated to preserving the park for the inner-city residents it serves. He is very active in Scouting and has been instrumental in bringing scouting activities to the park.
