Coral Gables Museum
The Coral Gables Museum in Miami-Dade county was opened to the public in 2011 after the management was given permission to occupy the city's historic fire and police station building. The building which houses the museum is listed among the historical buildings in the city of Coral Cables and is beautifully decorated with coral cables. The idea for the museum started in mid 1990's when a group of architects, artists and cultural insiders came together. First they rented out a room where they had their work stored. Later they came up with an idea of putting up a museum in the city of Coral Cables. The museum has a total of 24,249 square feet which includes 9 exhibition galleries, a catering kitchen, public plaza, giftshop, workshop, community meeting room, and more. The museum is renowned for having a solid display of Coral Gables history and contains exhibits that explain the culture and history of Coral Cables. The exhibits in the museum include art, town planning and architecture. There are also current exhibitions displayed in the museum from time to time.
The museum offers educational tours that highlight local culture, history and architecture. Exhibit tours are held on Sundays, Downtown historical walking tours are on Saturdays, bike tours on Sundays of every month, and Water Canoe Tours which are held monthly. Tour tickets and admission tickets may be purchased in advance or on their website. The museum is always open from Tuesday to Sunday to the public but closed on Mondays. Despite the Coral Gables Museum being small in size, it has space which is rented out for business and social functions. The exterior and interior settings of the museum offer a conducive environment for any type of party or meeting.
Events include First Friday Gallery Night at the museum which is one of the Coral Gables Trolley stops, special gallery night performances featuring free admission those evenings, and a museum bar. The second Saturday of the month features Family Day with fun, free activities and free admission to the exhibits.
