Curry Hammock State Park

Body

Curry Hammock State Park consists of a bunch of islands in the Middle Keys in Marathon.  Come and enjoy a little bit of Florida's wild side by exploring the hardwood hammocks on these tropical islands, the wetlands, swamps and seagrass beds that are home to diverse wildlife.  The park runs along both sides of US1 for 11 miles all the way to Long Key with the entrance found on the Atlantic Ocean side. The shallow water beach offers up to 1200 feet of sandy shoreline to enjoy.  It's a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. The family can let the kids play at the playground and enjoy a nice picnic at the many shaded pavilions.  Grills, showers and restrooms are there for your convenience on the ocean side of Little Crawl Key.  All facilities are fully accessible and pavilions can be reserved for a fee.

Biking and hiking can be enjoyed at Curry Hammock.  Bicycling is allowed on all park roads and along the Overseas Heritage Trail which allows for bike access to Marathon. All children 16 and under are required by state law to wear bike helmets inside the park. Bicycles are not allowed on hiking trails, restroom ramps or other non-road areas. If you come without your bike you can take a hike down the 1.5 mile nature trail through the hammock.  Please be aware that this is not a paved trail and proper footware is advised.

Canoeing and kayaking expeditions can be great fun around Curry Hammock State Park since there are miles of shoreline with generally calm currents to enjoy. Bring your own non-motorized boats and launch from the day-use or campground area. Be sure to explore the beautiful mangrove creek. If you don't have your own, single and double kayaks may be rented for 2 hourrs at a time from 8am to 5pm.  Stand-up paddleboards (SUP) can also be rented during those hours.

Ogle at all the fantastic wildlife that can be seen within the park. Manatees, dolphins, spotted rays, bald eagles, osprey and sharks can all be seen while enjoying the park.  Snorkeling and swimming can bring you up close and personal with some of these beautiful species. The water is shallow but is covered with seagrass which may intimidate some children just beginning to swim or snorkel. Please remember to stay in designated areas. Bring out your fishing gear and try your luck at catching bonefish, permit, snapper, sharks and more right alongside the channel. Remember to bring your fishing license which can be purchased at local bait & tackle shops.

Curry Hammock maintains a year round campground with 28-sites fit for both tents and RVs.  Some of the RV sites also have a small sandy area next to it for pitching a tent as well. The restroom is environmentally sensitive with its composting toilets and solar-powered hot showers. The restroom and some of the camping sites are ADA accessible. A picnic table, water, 20/30/50-amp electric, and a grill can be found at each site. The beautiful Atlantic Ocean is within site of the campground. Reservations for Curry Hammock can be made through Reserve America

Curry Hammock is part of the South Florida Birding Trail. and plays host each year to the Florida Keys Birding and Wildlife Festival.
