Juneteenth Celebration Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival
Kick off Broward County Libraries' Summer Learning Program and celebrate Juneteenth at Northwest Branch Library's annual Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Juneteenth Festival. This fun, free, all-ages event is scheduled for Saturday, June 17th from 11AM to 5PM at Apollo Park, located at 1580 NW 3rd Ave., Pompano Beach, FL 333060, adjacent to the Northwest Branch Library.
From children's fun to great music and food, the Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Juneteenth Festival offers a good time for all ages. Enjoy live blues and R&B music, storytellers and dance performances. Explore history with the Key West Civil War Re-enactors and a visit to the Black History Mobile Museum. Experience virtual reality with staff from Broward County Libraries' Creation Station. Learn about the festival's namesake and enjoy free samples at the sweet potato educational program. There will also be relay races, a watermelon eating contest, free face painting and trackless train rides.
Featured performers will include:
-Storytellers Windell Campbell and Beverly Jones
-Music from Delt the DJ
-Blues musician Joey Gilmore
Guests can purchase food from vendors, and anyone under 18 will be served free pizza courtesy of the Summer Breakspot Program. But save some room for dessert - there will also be a sweet potato pie contest to crown the community's best sweet potato pie maker.
Children, teens and adults can also register for the 2017 Summer Learning Program to win prizes for reading, attending library events and participating in learning activities.
Held each year in honor of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom or Emancipation Day, the Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Juneteenth Festival is presented by the Friends of Northwest Branch Library.
