May Memorial at the Butler House
The Deerfield Beach Historical Society would like to honor all Veterans as well as those who lost their life in the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of their country. The event will include a flag-folding ceremony, presentation of ceremonial wreath, speeches on "Thoughts on Memorial Day", bagpipes, salutes to Fallen Soldiers, raffles, tours of historic Butler house and patriotic music. Food will also be available.
Participating groups include American Legion Post #162, American Legion Post #287, BSO Explorers, and the Deerfield Beach High School Marine JROTC under the direction of Leslie Thomas. The ceremony will begin with an Invocation by Dr. Nathaniel Knowles, Presentation of Colors, Flag Salute, and singing of the National Anthem by the JROTC. Coast Guard veteran and Historical Society Board Member Ed Dietrich Jr. will present a commemorative wreath in recognition of each service group represented at the ceremony.
Several local officials, including Deputy Mayor Richard Rosenzweig and State Representative Gwyndolen Clarke Reed, will share their “Thoughts on Memorial Day.” Additional program activities will include a flag-folding drill by the JROTC, “Taps” by Jillian Saperstein, and a traditional 21-gun salute.
Bring along a blanket or chair. Entrance to the event is free, with optional purchases for gifts and other mementos. Picnic-type food will be available for free; donations accepted. Free flags will be distributed, compliments of Aurora Nurses Home Health Care. There will also be free tours of Butler House.
