Chinese New Year with the Norton
The newly renovated Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach is celebrating the Year of the Boar! Fireworks and a Dragon Dance highlight the Norton’s free Chinese New Year’s celebration on Saturday, February 16th. Activities begin at noon and include music, exhibition tours, lectures, storytelling, art projects for all ages, and more.
The acclaimed ensemble, Music From China, performs a concert of new music for ancient Chinese and western instruments, including a work recently co-commissioned by the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. Laurie Barnes, the Elizabeth B. McGraw Curator of Chinese Art, introduces a rare 16th-century screen painting depicting a Chinese Lantern Festival recently acquired for the Museum Collection.
Activities throughout the day include a lantern-making workshop, a calligraphy demonstration and workshop, Chinese art projects for all ages, and tours. The event culminates in a fireworks display over the Intracoastal Waterway, and the screening of Chinese animated short films in the Pamela and Robert B. Goergen Garden.
At the Norton, in addition to participating in the celebration and viewing the diverse art collection, you can dine in the restaurant, ogle the jewelry and gifts in the shop, stroll the grounds out to the Intracoastal, and learn about the planned major expansion.
FREE and open to the public!
Festivities run from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, 2019. (The Museum, however, is free to the public all day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
